Connect a domain you already own

Point your restaurant’s existing domain to the website Selflane hosts for you. Set aside 10 to 20 minutes to make the DNS change with the company that manages your domain’s DNS, such as GoDaddy or Bluehost.

Get ready

Before you change anything, make sure you have:

Access to the account that manages DNS for your domain. This is not always the same company where you bought the domain.
The DNS instructions from Selflane. They list the exact Type, Name, and Value for your domain.
A copy or screenshot of your current DNS records. Keep it until the site is live.

Do not change your domain’s nameservers unless Selflane tells you to. You only need to add or update the records in your DNS instructions.

Add the DNS records

Sign in to the company that manages DNS for your domain.
Open the DNS records or DNS zone for your domain.
Add every record in your Selflane DNS instructions. Copy the Type, Name, and Value exactly.
If a record already uses the same Type and Name, update that record instead of adding a duplicate.
Leave the TTL at the provider’s default unless your instructions say otherwise.
Save your changes.

Your provider may call the Value field Points to, Target, Data, or Destination. It means the same thing.

Do not use a record value from another restaurant or an online example. Selflane sends the values that belong to your domain.

GoDaddy

Use these steps when your domain uses GoDaddy nameservers.

Sign in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio.
Open the domain you want to connect, then select DNS.
Select Add New Record, then choose the record type from your Selflane instructions.
Enter the Name and Value from the instructions, then save the record.
Repeat for each remaining record.

Bluehost

Use these steps when Bluehost manages your domain’s DNS.

Sign in to the Bluehost Portal.
Select Domains, then open your domain.
Select the DNS tab.
In Manage Advanced DNS Records, select Add record.
Choose the record type, enter the Name and Value from your Selflane instructions, then save it.
Repeat for each remaining record.

Protect your email

Website records and email records are separate. Only change the records listed in your Selflane DNS instructions.

Do not remove or change your email records, including MX, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC. A TXT record in the Selflane instructions is for website verification. Add it only with the exact name and value provided.

Wait for the connection

Adding the records takes about 10 to 20 minutes. DNS changes often appear within an hour, but they can take up to 48 hours to reach every visitor. Selflane checks the connection automatically and brings the website online when the records are correct.

After the change has had time to update, open your domain in a private browser window. If you still see your old website or an error after 48 hours, contact Support.

Contact Support if you cannot find the DNS screen, do not have the DNS instructions, or see a record you are not sure whether to replace. Include your domain name, DNS provider, and a screenshot of the records screen.
