POSManualPayment Settings

Payment Settings

Connect your card reader before taking payments at this station. Open More > Payment Settings. You can also get here from the gear icon on the PAX or MagTek panel of the payment screen.

If Edit POS App Settings is checked under Manager Access Rules in Job Roles, a manager must sign in to open this screen. It opens straight away if the signed-in staff member’s role has manager access, or if no role has it.

The Payment Settings screen

The screen has a card for each reader type: Stripe, PAX, MagTek, and Ingenico. Scroll sideways to see them all.

Below the cards:

  • Max payment amount - the largest card payment this station takes. Change it in the Back Office.
  • Device WiFi Information - the network name (Name (SSID)) and IP Address of this iPad. The POS only talks to card readers and printers on the same network, so check that this matches the network your reader is on.

In Selflane POS 7.9.1 or later, the maximum applies to PAX, Stripe readers, Tap to Pay, and MagTek before the card is collected. Tips aren’t counted; other adjustments are.

Choose the default reader

Tap the checkmark at the lower-left of a reader’s card to make it the default. The checkmark turns green, the card gets a green border, and you see a message such as Default to PAX Terminal.

The default is saved on this iPad only. A new install starts with PAX. Set the default on each station.

The default decides:

  • Which reader the Credit Card and Debit Card buttons and Open Tab use on the payment screen: MagTek if MagTek is the default, otherwise PAX. Gift cards always use PAX.
  • Whether Stripe is listed first and selected on the payment screen. Stripe is listed whenever your business has it turned on; making it the default moves it to the top.
  • Whether the POS connects and reconnects to a MagTek reader on its own. It only does this when MagTek is the default.
  • Whether the POS looks for a Stripe Bluetooth reader on its own. It doesn’t when MagTek or Ingenico is the default.
  • Whether Lost a processed transaction? appears on the payment screen. It’s hidden when MagTek is the default.

PAX terminal

  1. Find the PAX terminal’s IP address:
    • On an S300, hold F and press 1. On an SP30, press F. Enter today’s date as the password in MMDDYYYY format (05052023 for May 5, 2023).
    • Go to Communication > LAN Parameters > IP Address, and write down every number and dot.
    • On a PAX A35, tap the top-left corner of the screen to see the IP address.
  2. On the PAX card, tap Edit IP Address. If an address is already saved, tap the pencil beside it.
  3. In PAX Terminal IP Address, enter the IP address exactly as shown on the terminal, including the dots, and tap Save. You see PAX IP Updated.
  4. Tap the PAX checkmark to make it the default.

The card then shows IP: <address>. The POS doesn’t test the connection, so take a small test payment to confirm it works. The address is also saved to Selflane, so it comes back if you reinstall the app on this iPad. In Selflane POS 7.9.1 or later, an invalid IP address is refused, and a failed save leaves the previous address in place. Save an empty field to clear the address; you see PAX IP Cleared.

Keep the iPad and PAX terminal on the same network. If the terminal doesn’t respond, see PAX terminal troubleshooting. The PAX card also has a Troubleshoot link once an IP address is saved.

In Selflane POS 7.9.1 or later, Troubleshoot opens the PAX help page correctly.

To have customers add a tip on the PAX terminal, turn on Tip Entered on PAX Terminal in POS settings.

Stripe reader

First complete your Stripe account and location setup.

  1. On the Stripe card, tap Connect. For an existing connection, tap Edit.
  2. In Stripe Terminal Reader, choose your Location. If your business has no Stripe account or location yet, the screen tells you to create one in the Back Office under Owner's Portal > Payments > Terminal. You can’t create one from the POS.
  3. Choose a Reader Type: Bluetooth, Internet, or Tap to Pay.
  4. Tap Discover <type> Readers. Tap Cancel to stop searching.
  5. Under Discovered Readers. Click to connect, tap your reader. The connected reader turns green with a checkmark.
  6. Check that Connected Reader shows the reader, then close the screen and tap the Stripe checkmark to make it the default.

Under Connected Reader you see the reader’s serial number (SN), battery level, and software version. Tap Disconnect to disconnect it. In Selflane POS 7.6.1 or later, if the heading reads Reconnecting ..., the reader dropped and the POS is reconnecting. A Bluetooth reader that drops reconnects on its own. The POS doesn’t search for a Stripe Bluetooth reader on its own when MagTek or Ingenico is the default.

When a reader update is available, you see Device update is available. To install it, tap Update Reader Firmware on the Stripe panel of the payment screen. You see the progress while it installs.

Tap ? in the top corner for Stripe Terminal hardware help.

Stripe card status messages

In Selflane POS 7.6.1 or later, the Stripe card tells you what to do when the reader isn’t connected:

MessageWhat to do
Connecting to reader ...Wait.
Reader disconnected. Reconnecting ...Wait for the reader to reconnect.
Reader battery is empty. Plug it in.Charge the reader.
Reader is out of range. Move it closer, then tap Connect.Move the reader closer to the iPad, then tap Connect.
Reader pairing was removed. Forget the reader in iPad Settings › Bluetooth, then tap Connect in the POS. (7.9.1 or later)Forget the reader in the iPad’s Bluetooth settings, then tap Connect in the POS.
Reader disconnected. Turn it on, then tap Connect.Turn the reader on, then tap Connect.

See Stripe reader troubleshooting for more.

Tap to Pay on iPhone

In Selflane POS 6.80 or later, use a supported iPhone to accept contactless payments without a separate reader. On the Stripe card, tap Connect, choose your Location, and choose the Tap to Pay reader type. Tap to Pay appears only on devices that support it. When connected, the Stripe card shows Tap to Pay instead of a serial number.

See Tap to Pay on iPhone for requirements and the first-payment prompts.

MagTek reader

MagTek readers work with Selflane POS 7.3.0 or later. Save your processor credentials in MagTek Payments before connecting the reader.

  1. On the MagTek card, tap Connect. For an existing connection, tap Manage.
  2. In MagTek Reader, choose a Connection: Bluetooth (Wireless) or USB / Lightning (Wired).
    • Bluetooth: to pair, hold the reader’s power button until it beeps 4 times. The default pairing code is 000000.
    • Wired: plug the reader into the iPad with its cable.
  3. Tap Scan MagTek Devices. Tap Stop Scan to stop.
  4. Tap Connect next to your reader. When it shows Connected, close the screen.
  5. Tap the MagTek checkmark to make it the default.

The MagTek card shows Device: <name> when connected, or Last device: <name> when not. In Selflane POS 7.9.1 or later, it also shows its connecting status while connecting.

In Selflane POS 7.5.0 or later, the connected reader shows its battery level next to Connected, and on the MagTek panel of the payment screen: green, orange at 20% or below, and red at 5% or below. The payment screen also warns Low battery or Battery critical. The Payment Settings card doesn’t show the battery.

To disconnect a Bluetooth reader, tap Disconnect. A wired reader disconnects when you unplug it.

Unplug a wired reader before switching between Bluetooth and wired. If it’s still plugged in, you see Unplug the reader first, and the connection type doesn’t change. The POS blocks the switch because switching while plugged in would leave the reader unusable until you restart the app.

Automatic connection

When MagTek is the default, the POS connects to the last reader it used each time the app opens or comes back to the front, and when staff sign in. In Selflane POS 7.5.3 or later, if a Bluetooth reader drops, the POS keeps trying to reconnect in the background (every 30 seconds after the first few tries) and shows Reader unavailable. Reconnecting in the background; tap Connect to retry now. To try right away, tap Connect on the MagTek card, then Connect next to the reader.

If the MagTek reader doesn’t respond

Most of these messages are in Selflane POS 7.5.5 or later.

MessageWhat to do
Device not responding. Press and hold the power button until you hear 10 beeps, then reconnect.Restart the reader as described, then tap Connect again.
MagTek reader is not responding. Reconnect it in Payment Settings, then try again. (7.9.1 or later)Reconnect the reader in More > Payment Settings, then charge again.
MagTek reader is not ready yet. Wait a few seconds, then tap Charge again.Wait, then tap Charge again.
Transaction timed out. Checking the reader…Wait. It changes to one of the next two messages.
Transaction timed out. No card was read.Charge again and have the customer present their card.
MagTek reader disconnected or unavailable.Reconnect the reader, then charge again.
Card read but not received. No payment taken.Charge again. The card wasn’t charged.
MagTek authorization status is unknown and may have succeeded. Verify the transaction before taking further action.Don’t charge again until you’ve checked whether the payment went through.
Card declined. Ask for another card or payment method.Ask for another card or payment method.
Payment was approved, but the tip could not be confirmed. Do not charge the card again. Verify the transaction, then retry the tip adjustment.Don’t charge again. Check the payment, then adjust the tip.

If a charge fails to start, tap ? next to the error for Restart the reader: hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps, release it, and try the charge again. This is a quick restart. When the reader doesn’t respond to connecting at all, use the longer reset (10 beeps) from the first row of the table.

Ingenico terminal

Tap Connect (or Edit) on the Ingenico card to open Connecting Ingenico Devices. It lists the Ingenico terminals registered to your business, with each terminal’s serial number, name, merchant ID, device type, and environment. Tap one to select it. If one is already selected, tap Disconnect to clear it.

The POS doesn’t take payments through Ingenico. In Selflane POS 7.9.1 or later, you can’t choose it as the default reader. A saved Ingenico default returns to the standard default. Use PAX, Stripe, MagTek, or Tap to Pay for payments.

Recover a PAX payment

If a PAX terminal approved a card but the order doesn’t show the payment, use Lost a processed transaction? on the payment screen. It’s PAX only and is hidden when MagTek is the default. See Pay Order.
