Sell a Combo

Sell a main, a side, and a drink together at the combo price in one step, instead of adding and discounting each dish. On the iPad, open the Combo tab on the menu, or tap Combo on a dish already in the cart.

The Combo tab and combo editor are in Selflane POS 7.00 or later. Combos are set up in the Back Office. See Combos to create them and choose each group’s pricing.

Add a combo from the Combo tab

The Combo tab appears at the end of the menu tabs when your business has at least one combo. It shows on the iPad only. On an iPhone, see On an iPhone.

  1. Tap the Combo tab, then tap a combo.
  2. The combo editor opens. The right side, Combo Dish Options, lists each group with its pricing. The left side shows the combo’s photo, name, and the dishes picked so far. In Selflane POS 7.8.3 or later, the combo’s Back Office description shows under its name.
  3. Tap one dish in every group. Tapping another dish in the same group replaces the pick.
  4. Some dishes open a dish editor over the group list: dishes with required modifiers, dishes sold by weight, open-price dishes, and unavailable dishes. Finish it, then tap Choose Dish on the left to go back to the groups.
  5. Use the minus and plus buttons on the left to set how many of this combo to add.
  6. Tap Add to Cart.

Add to Cart stays disabled until every group has a pick and the open dish editor is complete. Until you pick a dish, the left side shows No Dishes Selected.

To add optional modifiers, a customer name, or a note to a picked dish, tap that dish on the left.

To back out without adding the combo, tap the trash icon at the top of the left side.

What each group’s price means

Each group header shows its pricing rule from the Back Office:

Header showsBack Office Pricing TypePrice of a dish picked from this group
Original PriceNo changeThe dish’s regular price.
Fixed Price and an amountFixed PriceThat amount, whichever dish is picked.
A percentage, such as 20.0% offPercentage DiscountThe dish’s price minus that percentage, rounded to the cent.
Fixed Allowance and an amountAmount DiscountThe dish’s price minus that amount, never below $0.
Custom PriceCustom PriceThe price set for that dish in the combo. A dish without one uses its regular price.

Dish tiles in the group list show each dish’s regular price. The picked dishes on the left show their combo price. Modifiers add their price on top of the combo price.

Name every group in the Back Office. A group without a name shows on the POS as Group 0, Group 1, and so on, counting from 0.

Turn a dish in the cart into a combo

If a dish in the cart is in the first group of a combo, its cart line shows a Combo button.

  1. Tap Combo on the cart line.
  2. The menu switches to the Combo tab and shows only the combos for that dish, with a bar that says Showing combos related to and the dish name. Tap the x on the bar to cancel and see all combos again.
  3. Tap a combo. If only one combo includes the dish, its editor opens right away.
  4. The dish from the cart is already picked in the first group. Pick the rest.
  5. Set the quantity, then tap Save. The combo replaces the dish’s cart line.

The combo starts at a quantity of 1, even if the dish line had more. Set the quantity before you tap Save.

To keep the dish as it was, tap the trash icon instead. The dish stays in the cart.

The same Combo button appears when you add items to an existing order.

Change or remove a combo

On the iPad, a combo is one line in the cart. Tap it to reopen its editor.

  • Tap a picked dish on the left to reopen its dish editor and change its choices.
  • Tap the x on a picked dish to clear that group’s pick.
  • Change the quantity, then tap Save.
  • Tap the trash icon at the top to remove the whole combo.

Break a combo into single items

Use this when a guest wants the dishes but not the combo.

  1. In the combo editor, tap the share icon to the left of Add to Cart or Save.
  2. Confirm Break this combo into single items? with Yes.

The picked dishes go to the cart as single items at their regular prices, and the combo is removed. Each dish keeps the combo’s quantity. The button works once at least one dish is picked and every picked dish has its required choices.

Unavailable dishes and combos

Dish tiles in a combo show today’s count against the daily limit, such as (18/20), when the dish has one. A dish is grayed out with an Unavailable badge when:

  • it’s 86’d,
  • a required modifier group can’t be filled because its choices are 86’d, or
  • it has reached its daily limit.

Picking an unavailable dish shows the dish name, This item is 86'ed or Today's limit is reached, and Please confirm with a manager before selecting this item for the combo. For a modifier group that can’t be filled, the group’s name shows too.

  1. Tap Continue Ordering, or tap Cancel to pick something else.
  2. If you don’t have a manager role, a manager approves on the iPad.

If your business has no manager roles, or you have one, Continue Ordering adds the dish right away. See Job Roles. Once approved, the dish doesn’t need approval again when you send the order.

A combo marked Out of Stock in the Back Office is grayed out on the Combo tab with an Unavailable badge.

The Unavailable badges and this approval are in Selflane POS 7.7.2 or later.

Out of Stock combos

In Selflane POS 7.8.3 or later, adding an Out of Stock combo needs a manager’s approval. Earlier versions let staff add it without approval.

  1. Tap the combo. On an iPhone, tap Save in Make a Combo.
  2. The POS shows the combo name, This item is 86'ed, and Please confirm with a manager before adding this combo.
  3. Tap Continue Ordering, or tap Cancel to leave the combo off the order.
  4. If you don’t have a manager role, a manager approves on the POS.

On the iPad, the combo editor then opens. Pick dishes as usual. On an iPhone, the combo is added to the order.

As with dishes, Continue Ordering goes straight through if your business has no manager roles or you have one. Once approved, the combo doesn’t need approval again when you send the order.

If a combo goes Out of Stock after it’s on the order, sending, paying, or submitting added items opens Items are 86'ed. If a dish is also over its daily limit, the title is Over today's limit. The combo’s row says This combo is 86'ed.

  1. Keep Remove to take the whole combo off the order, or choose Approve to sell it.
  2. Tap Apply & Send, Apply & Pay, or Apply & Submit. If you chose Approve and the sheet says Needs a manager, a manager approves on the POS.

Tap Back to return to the order without sending.

On an iPhone

The iPhone has no Combo tab. To sell a combo, add the first dish, then tap Combo on its line.

  1. Make a Combo opens with a tab for each combo that includes the dish.
  2. Under Item 1, Item 2, and so on, tap one dish for each remaining group. Tap a picked dish again to clear it.
  3. Tap Save.

Switching combo tabs clears the picks. Please select items first means no dish is picked yet.

The iPhone screen shows less than the iPad editor:

  • Groups show as Item 1, Item 2, and so on, without group names or pricing.
  • Dish tiles show regular prices and no daily-limit counts.
  • Out of Stock combos aren’t marked.

Picking an unavailable dish asks for approval the same way as on the iPad.

In the cart, each dish of a combo has its own line, and the combo’s quantity follows the first dish. Deleting any of those lines removes the whole combo. Combo lines can’t be moved to another seat or item.

To change a combo, tap Combo on its first dish again. Make a Combo opens with no picks, and Save replaces the other dishes.

What staff might see

  • No Combo Groups Found — the combo has no groups. Edit it in the Back Office.
  • No dishes configured for this group — none of the group’s dishes are on this iPad’s menu. You can’t add this combo until the group has a dish. Publish the menu, or add dishes to the group.
  • A combo change from the Back Office isn’t showing — combo changes reach the POS after you publish your menu or reopen the business on the iPad.
  • Combos — create combos and set group pricing in the Back Office.
  • Make Order — build an order on the POS.
  • Add Item — add dishes to an existing order.
  • Job Roles — choose which roles can approve manager actions.
